BREAKING NEWS: Lucasarts Closing. Disney To Close The Games Publisher

The news we have been fearing for a few months now has come true. LUCASARTS IS TO CLOSE. The games studio that brought us classics such as Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion will be no more.

Over on Game Informer they broke the news just minutes ago saying:

"Game Informer has learned that Disney is closing its LucasArts game publishing subsidiary. We received an email from a LucasArts representative confirming the news.

The official statement reads as follows:

"After evaluating our position in the games market, we've decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company's risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games. As a result of this change, we've had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles."

There are still a number of questions that need answering.  What happens to The Old Republic and will we ever see Star Wars 1313?  UPDATE:  Just seen an article over on KOTAKU and they have been informed that both Star Wars 1313 and first Assault are cancelled. Disney will still use the LucasArts name to license games, but the studio is no more.

I'm personally gutted about this news.  I grew up with Lucasarts and they are an important part of gaming history.  I feel sorry for those who will lose their jobs.  The Bearded Trio wish everyone at Lucasarts the best of luck and hope bigger and better doors will be opened.
