Drew McIntyre has acknowledged that WWE outings are always a “sad moment,” but believes that being let go is a superstars’ chance to reinvent themselves.
A host of WWE main roster talent has been released through the promotion in recent months with Braun Strowman, Aleister Black, Murphy, Mickie James, Peyton Royce and Billie Kay all leaving the company, among others.
McIntyre knows what an outing is like, having left WWE in 2014. A spell on independent stages and in IMPACT Wrestling allowed him to try different things, before returning to WWE and ultimately fulfilling the pledge that Vince McMahon had. did about him in his early days – that he would be a WWE Champion.
According to McIntyre, there’s no reason others can’t do the same.
Speaking at a virtual press conference, McIntyre said, “You know when the releases happen it’s a sad time. We’re going to miss seeing a lot of our superstars regularly every week (on) television. But at the same time, it’s a huge opportunity, that’s the way I see it.
“Maybe some of the superstars who were released weren’t particularly happy with their position. Now they have the opportunity to go out there and reinvent themselves and reopen the world. The wrestling scene was flourishing and will be booming again very soon with fans live in the building all over the world.
“And they’ll have the chance to go out there and try something different. Really make their own name and create their own buzz.
“I was so lucky that when I was released from WWE that’s exactly what my state of mind was – I’m going to broadcast the image that I see myself as, as opposed to what others see me as. Luckily it caught on. I was given a lot of opportunities outside of WWE to make a name for myself and it brought me back to WWE and to the top of the mountain.
“There are so many talented people who have just been released. They can do the exact same thing [as I did]. If they have the work ethic and the passion, they’ll make it happen and I’ll see them all again someday. “
